Meet the Sheffield semi-finalist: Rohan Wadke, head chef at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House

It’s going to be a closely fought contest in our first heat of National Chef of the Year in Sheffield. Ahead of the cooking getting underway on the 11th June, we took time out to chat to semi-finalist Rohan to get this thoughts on the competition.

Tell us how you first heard about the competition and what attracted you to enter?

One of my head chefs did this competition a couple of years ago and at that time I was helping him compete.

How did you hear the news that you had made the semi-finals?

My friend sent me a message on Facebook with congratulations. I was working that day so then I checked on Twitter .

How did you celebrate this amazing achievement?

I told my hotel owner about it and then sent a proud message to my family.

How are you preparing for the semi-final?

I am practising every element on the plate and I am trying each bit individually so it's easier for me to understand the component’s flavour so I can see where I need to improve.

Which of the courses are you most looking forward to serving?

My starter is the dish I am most looking forward to serving as this is based on an English breakfast, elevating back pudding on a different level .
