Young National Chef of the Year finalist- Connor Farrer

Connor Farrer 1

Connor can always remember having an interest in cooking, especially when he was able to pursue this at school. He remembers being so excited to work with new ingredients, test new recipes and found true pleasure in seeing people’s positive reactions to what he had made. It was his mum that encouraged him to apply for work experience at The Ritz London and he spent the summer working for John Williams who introduced him to the Bournemouth and Poole Specialised Chef Course.

It’s the people he works with who inspire him the most, particularly John Williams. Working at The Ritz London inspires him as well; the food they produce must match up to the beautiful surroundings as the hotel has so much history. Connor finds being part of that truly incredible. Another chef that he admires is Thomas Keller, finding his story so inspirational and believing it shows what you can achieve if you really put your mind to it.

The Young National Chef of the Year title is such a prestigious award and attracts the best in young chef talent. Connor feels it’s a great chance to push himself, learn something new and be able to meet like-minded chefs!

Being crowned the winner would be a huge achievement for Connor, one he can’t even describe but he knows would give him a lot of confidence.

His mum may not be happy to know that the first person Connor shared the news about being a finalist with was John Williams, but he already knew! Connor has found John to have been so supportive throughout his training and has recently promoted him to be a chef de partie in the kitchen. Connor rang his mum straight after that call though.

Connor still hasn’t celebrated yet but when he does it will be with his colleagues from work. It’s a close team who are always very supportive of each other’s successes.

The three words that describe Connor’s style of cooking are classic, French and flavoursome.
