Meet YNCOTY finalist Dervis Mustafa, demi chef de partie at Petrus by Gordon Ramsay
Dervis completed the three-year Professional Chef Diploma at Westminster Kingsway College and is now a demi chef de partie at Petrus by Gordon Ramsay. Whilst studying he also worked part-time at Social Eating House. He wanted to be a chef as he simply loves food. Being able to take a simple raw ingredient and turn it into an amazing dish is what he loves most, as well as the fact that food helps to create new memories or enhance old ones.
When growing up he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do for a career but as soon as he got a part-time job in a small local restaurant, he knew he wanted to be a chef. When it comes to who inspires him, he says every single chef who has taken the time to teach him has proved to be a real inspiration.
Competing is something he loves as it provides him with an opportunity to be creative and cook his own dishes. He feels truly honoured to be part of The Young National Chef of the Year, especially with the current circumstances. Winning would mean so much to him as lockdown has proved to be a challenging time for so many chefs. He feels it would be an amazing end to such a tough year in his career.
To keep busy during lockdown, Dervis has been reading recipes and watching cooking programmes as well as taking the time to relax. Whilst the COVID-19 crisis has been extremely challenging, he has enjoyed a side of life he doesn’t usually get time for. He believes this crisis will make our industry stronger although he says it will take time to get back to its former glory.
